~ Week 33 ~

Week 33 baby reached the size of a Durian fruit. I know what the hell is a Durian?! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durian

Okay so that’s that sorted.  During week 33 babys bones were hardening more ( except the skull) and he/she was undergoing major brain development. I am so aware of how cramped it has gotten in there too some days the position can be very uncomfortable for me for a good few hours with my ribs being squashed and kicked! I can see my entire bump moving as well as feeling it now too, It’s not so obvious that Robin finally got to enjoy that one too! Very ‘Alien-like’  indeed.

Overall I still feel good, but now my feet are so swollen that nearly all my shoes except my flip flops and Jesus sandals, don’t fit me right now. It’s annoying and uncomfortable and kinda gross. I miss my ankles but I know it’s not a permanent thing so I shouldn’t moan too much. From reading up on Edema (swelling during pregnancy) I shouldn’t stand when I can sit or sit if I can lie down.. I need to follow this advice more..and have more  Espsom Salt soaks!

The crazy pregnancy dreams are back again but this could be down to having a lot on my mind with my never ending list of things to get for baby. We aren’t doing too bad but I would like to have all the basic necessities stocked up on soon just for my peace of mind. Though it’s not just an over active brain that’s disrupting my sleep but bump too. As much as I love being pregnant I am thoroughly looking forward to sleeping on my stomach and back again…comfortably ^_^

~ Week 32 ~

By 32 weeks it really seems not long now until we get to meet baby! All my reading information tells me that baby should have turned into the head-down position and ready for the descent! As he/she is bigger each week I can feel how cramped movements are and now I am getting kicked in the ribs too. Braxton Hicks I have felt a few times this past week, but nothing painful – phew! Only a tightening sensation that starts at the top of my bump and spreads outwards. Another indication that D-Day is nigh!  The list of things to get for baby is still long but getting a little shorter each week. Still not enough to ward off those crazy pregnancy dreams which are back again. People tell you to get as much sleep before baby comes – which I get! I do!

BUT! It is hard , when lying in bed isn’t as comfy as it used to be cos baby bumpo is in the way  or your dreams are so weird it wakes you up! sigh…

Today we had our ‘Intensive Prenatal Class’ through UCSF (the hospital I will deliver at)  which was very informative and the teacher was very quirky and fun. I knew we would have to watch a few DVDS on labour and birth  and C-sections but luckily it wasn’t anything too graphic or gruesome (for Robins sake!) I think I have seen (and learnt) more in that way, from watching ‘One Born Every Minute’ on telly!

If we learnt anything from yesterday is that anything can happen – when we turned up for the class, which was near where we live, the building it was meant to take place in was locked so we had to move to another location downtown! This delayed the day by 90minutes and parking was then an absolute nightmare and the car park we went to had a broken payment machine so  then we couldn’t pay which left us at risk of being towed,  Robin decided then it best to move it and just drive around and find street parking which ended up in finding a spot eventually not to far from the class but also a flat tyre (!)  Yep. Anything can happen.  And we will remember that for D-Day!

~ Week 31 ~

At week 31 baby is the size of a pineapple! He/she is now their birth length but still steadily gaining weight until D-day.

This past week I have experienced a variety of those symptoms that are typical to the third trimester of pregnancy.  I get out of breath so easily now as baby is taking up so much more room in there and pubic bone pain strikes many times during the day.  The cankles too are back with a vengeance and don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon and I have the trademark pregnancy waddle going on –  so an attractive combination eh!

Tiredness and crappy memory is something I am struggling with a lot now too esp as I don’t sleep through the night anymore (also explains my lateness at posting this week!) Both take getting used to esp the ‘Mummy brain’ part as I normally have a really good memory and now I just struggle to think of simple words (!)

Project Nursery is back underway again and this week we managed to get our Arms Reach mini bassinet that baby will sleep in the first few months and will help with nursing feeds during the night as I won’t even have to get out of bed. I have even started on my hospital bag. The car seat is ready to be installed now too and we are slowly building baby’s wardrobe which has led to the realisation that we need a chest of drawers for the nursery too. ^_^  I hope to have at least all the basics sorted by week 35 just in case! Who knew such a teeny person would need so much stuff!

I really would like to do more of an update, but as I already mentioned, these days I am just too deprived of zeds … zzz

~ Week 30 ~

Week 30 and baby is the size of a cucumber. Which is probably from head to toe, as other comparisons I have come across have said head of cabbage as he/she is approx 3 lbs in weight now. But seeing as I am late posting this week and I am technically 31 weeks today It probably is a bit more! Anyway..

This week, up until last night was just like previous weeks more or less. Lots of kicks and jabs from baby, stronger than ever, spells of tiredness and the odd feeling of breathlessness but then last night I had my first Braxton Hicks {false labour pains} experience and it was  really sore!  It only lasted for a few minutes but It stopped me in my tracks and was nothing like anything I have ever felt before. I found myself just breathing through it until it passed. Now all I can imagine is how painful the real thing will be! (!)   Afterwards baby moved non-stop for about two hours, so much so, I could not only feel it but see it too. The round ligament twinges are starting again so baby is probably having another growth spurt which means more Mederma and Palmers massages with a hot water bottle for me.

I most definately feel heavier and slower when I move around now, I even find myself waddling along – tres attractive I know. But now I understand why pregnant women get that way and  it’s not just due to the fact that you look and feel like a heffalump but due to pelvic pain and pressure too.

Bending down is now just so uncomfortable that I am pretty sure soon I won’t be able to give Lucky and Sox cuddles, or paint my toe nails and that one day whilst doing those things I won’t be able to get back up again!  Clumsy is now my middle name too, which is again apparantly normal at this stage of pregnancy and something to do with your centre of gravity being changed from all the extra weight. During the week I dropped the phone handset and it flew across the kitchen nearly hitting Soxy who sat even more wide-eyed than the norm under the kitchen table as it slid across the floor towards him in what seemed like slow motion. I kind of wished I had been able to record the whole incident because he is super cute when he’s freaked out  O_O   Another clumsy moment happened while I was making tea and I broke one of our favourite cool mugs that Robin got at a Christmas fair in Nuremburg a few years ago, to which he reacted in his usual chilled manner but resulted in me bawling crying like a ..um baby!  So yep the emotional rollercoaster of hormones have returned with a vengeance too ^_^  {yay} !

~ Week 29 ~

This week has been another good one! It passed pretty quickly and painlessly again. We experienced a three day heat wave here in the SF Bay area which was a bit tough going and * drum roll!*  I now have cankles – yay (!)?  But the cooling soothing fog soon returned and I was much happier for it. Apparantly Edema (swollen ankles)  are a typical week 29 symptom..It really is amazing how right on cue various body changes just kick in during pregnancy.

Baby is definately bigger. I can feel movements so much more frequently, stronger and even a crawling sensation right under the skin…which can sound a tad creepy and Sigourney Weaver in Alien-like like but it is cool and you do get used to it pretty fast.  It is now something that I find reassuring as it means baby is okay – alive and kicking! My stomach is really feeling squashed now so smaller portions it is when it comes to food and

All the reading sources say that baby’s weight  is still on the increase and will gain approx 4 lbs between now and birth – let the stretching commence! I keep expecting stretch marks to happen each week that passes, but so far I have been lucky, although I hear they can happen the very last week  which I guess is a major bummer but I am applying my Mederma or Palmers at least once a day so I shall see how much of the miraculous claims are true and whether I will be lucky with the no-stretch mark fairy! From this week onwards also, babys skeleton hardens even more and the brain, muscles, and lungs continue to mature, the pupils of the eyes respond to light more and allows baby to focus more readily and even see dim shapes! O_O

Last weekend we got to attend a maternity fair at Fort Mason which was great for information about different breast feeding resources to prams (strollers). We were happy to see in real life a Bumbleride stroller which is a brand we are definately interested in and I ordered my maternity hospital gown from a cool company called Labor Looks http://www.laborlooks.com/  which is run by a labour nurse and midwife. The idea is to have something pretty but practical to wear for labour and birth {and those first photos, even if you look like shite from exhaution } They are fully functional in the way a hospital gown should be but with an easy snap down sleeve for breastfeeding and skin to skin contact with baby – and this is a feature I liked particularily- they close up the side with velcro so should I need to walk around I won’t be flashing my bottom at everyone!  Nice.

I picked one of the newer designs that are not on the site just yet in a turquoise and deep purple colour. Once it is shipped to me I will take photos and post them here.

~ Week 28 ~

This week marked the beginning of my third trimester!! I have now entered the ‘home stretch’ of pregnancy YAY! I really feel like the countdown has begun and the next 12 weeks are going to fly by..

All my reading sources say baby is just getting bigger and smarter from now until birth, aswell as developing more fat to smooth out that wrinkly skin and now sleep includes REM which means he/she could be dreaming already. Whatever about is hard to imagine!

This week I felt pretty good again apart from feeling tired and needing the odd power nap, I was able to do all my regular activities without any niggling pains or twinges which was a relief. I had my monthly OB checkup and everything checked out okay. Baby seems to be average in size (judging by my tummies measurement!) and my weight gain is steadly on the up and up. This month I gained 4lbs, most of which I think happened in those two weeks where I wasn’t as active as normal due to round ligament pain.  It definately was a growth spurt time and doc tells me I should just expect it to come and go.

Project Nursery is still a work in progress. I think hitting the third trimester milestone has made me think about it again.  At the moment we are on the lookout for a bassinet that will fit in our bedroom for those first few weeks / months and which buggy (or stroller as they call them here in the US) system to choose.

I am very blessed to have received lots of super cute baby hand-me-downs this week too ( babygrows, toys and blankets etc) from my sister. It’s so exciting once the baby clothes  start to make their way into the house. I am exerting self control on spending in that area mind, as babies gender is  a surprise  I don’t want to end up with a ton of neutral colours! My Mum has knit us a mini Aran cardigain too (the first one!)  which I am thrilled about. Being an Aran Islander herself she is very very good at them and making them in such a tiny size is really something! I have watched her over the years make them for my nieces and nephews and great-nephew even when each of them were born so to be on the receiving end feels very special.  Once she sends it to me I will post pics! ^_^

Next month Robin and I have our Childbirth Preparation Class which should be  interesting. We decided on a one day ”intensive” class rather than to spread it out over a few evenings and weeks. I wonder how ”intensive” and  should they show us any labour and birthing videos hopefully  it won’t be anything too gory…for his sake ! ^_^

Bump Progress Week 28!

~ Week 27 ~

This week marks the end of my second trimester and baby is, in the fruit n’ veg world, the size of a turnip! {Mmm turnip!}

Baby officially has brain activity, sleeping at regular intervals and even opening  and closing his/her eyes. Hiccups  are now a regular thing too, which I’ve realised are those rhythmic movements close together. Super cute to imagin  –  night time is still the prime time for kicks and wiggles but I do feel those movements during the day too and I even see my bump move at times. Baby is definately getting stronger every week! We might have a future Riverdancer on our hands ^_^  Next week I will start to make note of babies movements and how often it happens which is recommened up until birth.

All that round ligament pain from last week has eased drastically and I could walk about and up and down those hills like normal again. Yeah! Though I am more aware now of feeling stretched and sore , so I am taking it easier and not pushing myself too hard.

The the new thing with me now is stretching my entire body during the night in my sleep which makes my right leg cramp up, which in turn wakes me up – FAIL!   All my reading sources say leg cramps are pretty common around this time due to the extra weight I am carrying so that probably explains it, but it’s funny that I seem to be triggering them for myself.  I think I will have to start stretching before bedtime and see it that helps.  Oh and nose bleeds. I never get nose bleeds but again that’s another pregnancy trigger.

All in all week 27 has been a good one and without too much discomfort which in pregnancy is always a good thing!
